The summer is coming to a close and it is time to get your kids ready to go back to school. While your kids' minds might be on what to wear on the first day of school, you should be focused on what health precautions need to be taken so they have a great school year.
Promote healthy eating habits.
The prevalence of overweight children aged 6 to 11 more than doubled in the past 20 years.
Children who are overweight are at greater risk for bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, and social and psychological problems. Additionally, they are more likely to have health problems as adults.
Healthy lifestyle habits, including healthy eating and physical activity, can lower the risk of becoming overweight and developing related diseases.
One way to improve a child's diet is to provide healthy snack alternatives.
Get your child in for a yearly physical.
A child's health can change from year to year. It is important to receive a complete examination on an annual basis.
Make sure all immunizations are current.
School regulations, including some colleges, require a child's immunizations be up-to-date before they start classes.
If there is any doubt, check with the pediatrician and the school.
Pick the right backpack for your child.
Choose a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back.
Pack light and have the child use both shoulder straps.
Traveling to and from school.
Review safety rules for children taking the bus, riding in a car, biking, or walking.
If your child has a chronic illness.
School nurses and teachers must be made aware ofyour child's needs, including medications. Talk to them before school begins.
Update emergency numbers.
Make sure that the school and your child know how to reach you or another caregiver at all times.
