Cough and Cold Prevention and Treatment

Cold symptoms can be very burdensome. Often, patients will experience symptoms such as runny nose, sore throat, cough, congestion, headache and tiredness. These symptoms can interfere with daily activities including work and school. As the cough and cold season approaches, Kroger would like to remind you and your family of some healthy tips to avoid cold symptoms, as well as tips in treating these symptoms if they occur.

Tips of Prevention:
  • Wash hands regularly throughout the day
  • Avoid actions such as biting nails and rubbing eyes
  • Avoid sharing drinks or eating utensils
  • Eat a healthy balanced diet including plenty of fruits and vegetables
  • Take a daily multivitamin

  Tips for Treatment:
  • Drink plenty of water and fluids high in electrolytes including sports drinks and chicken broth
  • Get regular rest
  • Eat a healthy balanced diet
  • Speak with your Kroger pharmacist about over-the-counter remedies that may be useful for your symptoms

Most cold symptoms are caused by viruses and therefore do not need to be treated with antibiotics. On some occasions, theses symptoms persist and lead to secondary bacterial infections that may require prescription treatment such as an antibiotic. If symptoms such as fever, colored mucus or foul smelling mucus are present with the symptoms mentioned above, a doctor visit may be warranted. Keep in mind that your Kroger pharmacist is always available to help you make educated decisions regarding your healthcare.
