With the holidays behind us, now is the time to reflect on the lifestyle changes we want or need to make. Kroger would like to help you work toward achieving your New Year's resolutions, so here are a few tips to help you get started on a happy and healthy new year!

Healthy Eating
- Stock up on nutrient-rich foods like vegetables, fruits, lean meats, whole-grain products and fat-free or low-fat dairy products. These foods have vitamins, minerals, fiber and other nutrients but are lower in calories.
- Eat fish at least twice a week. Recent research shows that eating oily fish containing omega-3 fatty acids may help lower your risk of death from coronary artery disease.
- Keep an eye on portion sizes even when eating out. Asking for smaller portions, having half of your meal packed in a to-go box, and sharing entrees are all ways to control the amount of food you are eating.
- Read nutrition labels and avoid foods high in saturated or trans fats and sodium.

Exercise
- Choose activities that are fun, not exhausting, and use music to keep yourself entertained.
- Exercise at the same time of day so it becomes a regular part of your lifestyle, but allow yourself to be flexible.
- Don't overdo it. Start out with low to moderate level activities, and slowly increase the duration and intensity of your exercise as you become more fit.
- Surround yourself with supportive people.

Smoking Cessation
- Be aware of the benefits involved with quitting such as a decreased risk of lung cancer, cardiovascular disease, and reduced respiratory symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.
- Keep a log of where you are when you smoke, who you are with, and identify situations or emotions that trigger your cravings for a cigarette. This will help you develop a strategy to avoid these triggers and cope with cravings.
- Think of smoking as unpleasant by associating it with something that is not particularly pleasurable for you. For example, if you like to smoke with others, smoke alone. Also, make smoking inconvenient, wait until one box of cigarettes is finished before buying another, and try not to carry cigarettes with you.
- Set a quit date, and use this day to rid your surroundings of cigarettes, lighters, and ashtrays. Make sure to tell your friends and family about your decision to quit, and keep yourself busy with different activities on the big day.
